In Denmark, patients can get reimbursement for medicine. Medical devices are either delivered to the patient/citizen or he or she will get a reimbursement.
Reimbursement of Medicine
When Danish citizens buy medicine on prescription, they receive a reimbursement automatically according to the reimbursement thresholds. You do not need a special grant to obtain general reimbursement, but there can be other conditions that must be met. For example, you may have to belong to a certain patient group or suffer from a certain disease.
The company marketing the medicine must apply for general reimbursement with the Danish Medicines Agency.
The Danish Medicines Agency reassesses the reimbursement status of all medicines regularly. This is to make sure that the medicines which bear general reimbursement still meet the criteria. Reassessment can also entail that the status of medicine without general reimbursement is changed if it now meets the criteria.
Providing or Reimbursing Medical Devices
The municipalities are responsible for providing or reimbursing medical devices that bear reimbursement in accordance with the Act on Social Services.
Such devices may include:
- Walking aids
- Ostomy aids
- Compression stockings
- Bathing chairs
